AutoHive Business Consulting is led by Barteld Jans Bakker, a Managing Director, Non-Executive Director and Certified Director of the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa with more than 18 years building, scaling and governing enterprises in the South African SME sector. He founded Care Net Consultants in 2012 and built it into South Africa's largest SME mobile occupational health network, operating 16 mobile clinics across Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. He co-founded and later exited a cloud-based accounting firm in Midrand in February 2026 through an EBITDA-based valuation and a structured share sale, and he founded and directs The Glass Castle Construction, an NHBRC-registered builder, and The Glass Castle Investments, the group's investment holding company. He holds an MBA with Merit from the University of Salford, awarded November 2024, whose dissertation evaluated the long-term effectiveness of family constitutions and succession plans in South Africa, a Professional Master's in Artificial Intelligence with Distinction, a Postgraduate Diploma in Taxation from GIBS, and a BCom in Business Management from the University of Pretoria. A Doctor of Business Administration in AI and Strategic Management is in progress at Woolf University, Malta.
Who is behind this
Eighteen years of building companies. One exit executed properly. A dissertation on the thing this division sells.
Barteld Jans Bakker. Managing Director, Non-Executive Director, AI Strategist, Certified Director of the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa. More than 18 years building, scaling and governing enterprises across occupational health, technology and strategic management, all of it in the SME sector. What follows is the record. You can check every line of it.
The record
Care Net Consultants, started in 2012 with nothing.
Founder and Managing Director since 2012, built from the ground up into South Africa's largest SME mobile occupational health network. The work is occupational health medicals, surveillance programmes and safety training for blue-collar industries: construction, manufacturing, mining, agriculture and logistics.
It scaled from a startup to a national footprint across Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, running a fleet of 16 mobile clinics. That is not a services brochure, it is a logistics business with compliance obligations attached, and it is the thing that taught the lessons this division now sells.
The advisory work sits in a deliberately narrow band: SMEs with annual turnover between R20 million and R250 million, with a particular focus on family-owned businesses. It is the band Care Net Consultants grew through, which is why the bottlenecks that stall a business at the same number are familiar rather than theoretical.
Built, valued, sold, rebuilt
He has done the hard part, not only advised on it.
He co-founded The Glass Castle Business Hub and a cloud-based traditional accounting firm in Midrand, Gauteng. He built it to profitability and then executed a strategic exit in February 2026: a clean exit through EBITDA-based valuation methodology and a structured share sale, with client relationships preserved through a five-year service continuation service level agreement.
Put plainly, he has sat on both sides of the structures he now designs. He has been the person selling, and he has been the person being valued. When a shareholders' agreement is drafted here, or a holding structure is put in place, it is drafted by someone who has watched a buyer's advisers pull one apart line by line and price the weaknesses.
Two entities founded since then are still running. The Glass Castle Construction, founded in 2020, is an NHBRC-registered home builder, registration 4000020435, holding NHBRC Provisional 5 registration under the Housing Consumers Protection Measures Act, 1998. It builds only for the group. The Glass Castle Investments, founded in 2022, is the group's investment holding company, holding equity stakes across the trading entities, a property portfolio and a diversified share portfolio across South African and international markets.
Six entities: founded, governed, one of them valued and sold, the rest still trading. That is the whole of the claim, and there is nothing in it that has to be taken on faith.

The one line that matters most
The dissertation is not decoration.
The MBA was awarded with Merit by the University of Salford in November 2024, at NQF Level 9, and the dissertation asked one question: how effective are family constitutions and succession plans in South Africa over the long term? Not in Germany, not in a textbook, here.
That distinction is the whole point. He did not read about family constitutions and then start selling them. He researched what actually happens to them over years, in this jurisdiction, in families that look like the ones this division works with. He then went and implemented what the research showed, in his own group first.
So when we say that most family constitutions fail, and we say why, that is not an opinion picked up at a conference. It is the finding, and it is what shapes how a constitution is drafted here.
Why a network, and not a firm
The hive is the model, and it is not a metaphor for the sake of it.
In nature the beehive is the model of purposeful automation. Every bee knows its role, every cell connects to the whole, and the colony thrives not because of a single leader but because the system is designed well enough to sustain itself.
The thread runs the same way across the group. Design systems that empower the people inside them. Make compliance effortless rather than burdensome. Care Net Consultants is the operating proof at scale. The Think Tank SA supplies the strategic frameworks. AutoHive Tech supplies the automation infrastructure. Business Consulting connects vision to execution, which is also why the non-executive seat is offered as a working position rather than a title.
Someone who has built, governed, exited and rebuilt across six entities is qualified to design the structure for one.
The mission, stated once. South Africa's SME economy does not need more consultants telling it what to do. It needs architects who build the infrastructure so businesses can do it themselves. The aim is to level the field, so that SMEs stand shoulder to shoulder with corporates, with one advantage the corporates cannot buy back: faster, sharper decisions.
Complex structures, plainly
Trusts, holding companies, property and asset companies, Section 42 transactions. What each protects, and when it is overkill.
